Lakewood, Colo. - September 13, 2023 - Just in time for September’s Responsible Gaming Education Month, the Colorado Division of Gaming (DOG, part of the Colorado Department of Revenue) officially launched the state’s Self-Exclusion program.
The Self-Exclusion program allows individuals with responsible gaming concerns to enroll to be excluded from Colorado regulated gaming. Previously, the Problem Gambling Coalition of Colorado (PGCC) enrolled individuals and managed the self-exclusion list.
“The Division of Gaming is committed to promoting responsible gaming in the Colorado gaming industry, and the launch of the state’s Self-Exclusion program is an exciting advancement for our state,” said Christopher Schroder, Director of the Colorado Division of Gaming. “We appreciate all of the work that the PGCC has done to get the Self-Exclusion program to this point. They are an excellent partner in this important work.”
A person may voluntarily apply to be self-excluded from gaming in Colorado. Individual self-exclusion means that an individual has made a conscious voluntary effort to exclude themselves from all forms of gaming under the regulatory purview of the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission and the Colorado Division of Gaming, including gambling at casinos and placing sports wagers at on-site and online sportsbooks. The exclusion period options are one year, three years or five years.
While the vast majority of these sign-ups will be completed online, individuals wishing to enroll in the self-exclusion list can also join by visiting a DOG office or by printing the form, having it notarized and mailing it into a DOG office.
Limited Gaming Rule 29 and Sports Betting Rule 9 established responsible gaming duties and requirements for Casinos and Sports Betting Operations, as well as guidance to individuals who wish to self-exclude from gaming in Colorado. These rules also established the Colorado Division of Gaming as the custodian of the self-exclusion list. The self-exclusion list has already been disseminated to members of the Gaming industry in Colorado, which will allow industry members to be able to take the appropriate steps in preventing enrolled individuals from gambling.
In the Division’s continued efforts to prevent problem gambling, the goal over the next year is to build a robust and technology leveraged website to make signups and dissemination as efficient as possible.
