NOTICE - Firearms Dealer Employment Eligibility

March 31, 2025

For a Responsible Person or Employee to be eligible for employment in the firearms industry, they must submit fingerprints for a criminal history background check as required by 18-12-407(3), C.R.S. and complete the training program required by 18-12-406(1)(c)(I), C.R.S. This training must be completed annually, and the criminal history background check is required every three years for the duration of the individual's employment.

To satisfy the employment eligibility requirements, Dealers should provide the Division with a list of all Responsible Persons and Employees who have successfully completed the training as soon as practicable after the training is completed. Each Responsible Person and/or Employee who completes the training with a minimum score of 70% will receive a certificate of completion from the training provider. The individual completing the training is required to provide their employer with a copy of this certificate for the Dealer's permanent records. These certificates are subject to inspection by Division Investigators.

Once the Firearms Dealer Division (Division) receives notice from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation that an individual has no disqualifying criminal record and notification from the individual's employer that the employee has passed the training requirement, the Division will provide the employer (Firearms Dealer) with an "Employment Eligibility Notification" for each eligible Responsible Person or Employee. These Employment Eligibility Notifications should be retained in the Dealer's business records.
