DMV Alert: Announcing the Colorado Digital ID™ Verifier in myColorado App

Below is an alert from the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles regarding the Colorado Digital ID™ Verifier in the myColorado App. If you have any questions about this notice, please contact the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles at dor_dmvcallcenters@state.co.us.

 

Last week, the Governor’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) released a new fraud mitigation tool: the Colorado Digital ID Verifier. This tool enhances the security and authenticity of the Colorado Digital ID™ in the myColorado app by allowing entities to scan a QR code to verify the credential's authenticity. This release follows a fraud case involving spoofing the digital ID - Denver man accused of spoofing state ID app to forge digital driver’s licenses, get lines of credit.

 

Since DMV has authorized the acceptance of the Colorado Digital ID as a secure and verifiable identity document, we wanted to make you aware of this critical new tool and recommend that you utilize it to authenticate a myColorado Digital ID.

In addition to the Verifier, staff should remain familiar with the Digital ID’s "Live View" feature, which includes a pulsating green dot and a current date/timestamp that updates every second.

 

How is this different from a Mobile Driver License or mDL?

The myColorado App Digital ID (dDL) is not the same as a mobile driver's license or mDL called the Colorado ID on Your Phone. The mDL is currently downloaded and stored in Apple, Google, or Samsung wallets. The mDL requires a special reader to access information and is approved for use at TSA in participating airports. We anticipate a rise in mDL use as mDL readers become more available.
