Hockey Wagers Increased by 177% Despite a Decrease in Total Wagers for June 2022
Coloradans Bet Over $97 Million on the Stanley Cup Playoffs
LAKEWOOD, Tuesday, August 2, 2022- With the Colorado Avalanche named Stanley Cup Champions, June wagers on Hockey increased by 177% to $29,539,256 compared to wagers placed in the same month in 2021 of $10,679,259.15. Operators are reporting a total of $97,016,733 in Stanley Cup Playoff wagers.
Notwithstanding the surge in Hockey bets, the total handle for June 2022 of $313,215,080.54 is a decrease of 13% from the prior month, May 2022, of $360,325,437.74. However, a year-to-year comparison shows a 44.64% increase from the total handle of June 2021, $229,764,688.29.
Completing a fiscal year at the end of June 2022, the total wagers for the last fiscal year, July 2021-June 2022, came in at $4,815,595,918.69, a 75.77% increase in the total wagers made in the fiscal year 2020-2021 of $2,739,761,626.57.
Taxes collected by the state in June 2022 from sports betting wagers totaled $268,280.48, representing an 83.3% decrease over the prior month, May 2022. Fiscal year taxes to date (FYTD) for June 2022 are $12,444,462.50, a 53.4% increase from the FYTD taxes for the same period in 2020-21 of $8,112,581.21.
In June, Baseball placed in the top spot for the month with $106.48 million in total wagers, followed by Basketball with just over $44 million in wagers. Ice Hockey wagers placed third with $29.54 million. The fourth spot went to Tennis with $23.44 million, and Soccer stayed in the fifth slot with $10.29 million.

With the passage of Proposition DD and the Colorado General Assembly's legislative bill in May 2019, the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission and the Colorado Division of Gaming became the statutory authority over the legalized sports betting regulation in Colorado. Legalized, regulated sports betting began in Colorado on May 1, 2020.
